Riley Green is bringing his country expertise to The Voice, but before taking a seat as a Coach, he put Jimmy Fallon through an unexpected vocal exercise: learning how to use a duck call. The lesson took place during Green’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon ahead of his Season 30 debut on NBC’s singing competition.
Green’s arrival on The Voice marks his first season as a Coach, with the Season 30 premiere scheduled for Monday, September 21, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. The episode will stream the following day on Peacock. NBC has also identified Green as a Coach for the show’s 31st season.
The duck-call demonstration followed up on an earlier Tonight Show moment. During a September 2025 appearance, Fallon revealed that Green had given him a duck call, although the country singer had not yet shown him how to use it. When the subject resurfaced, Green asked Fallon to demonstrate what he had learned before offering any instruction.
Fallon’s first attempt did not go according to plan. Green encouraged him to try the call before stepping in, joking that there was an even chance Fallon would blow into the wrong end. Fallon did exactly that, and then repeated the mistake. The studio audience responded with cheers as Fallon lowered his head onto the desk, eventually asking Green to show him the correct technique.
Green then produced his own duck call and demonstrated how it should be used. His performance created a convincing duck sound, and he added to the effect by looking around as though an actual bird had appeared nearby. Fallon tried again, this time using the proper end of the instrument, and produced a noticeably improved result.
The country singer was not finished with the feedback, however. Green told Fallon that his version sounded somewhat “kazoo-ish,” while still agreeing to go duck hunting with him someday. The exchange turned a small gift from a previous appearance into a playful tutorial, with Green serving as both instructor and judge.
The segment also connected with Green’s wider conversation about country music and his life away from the stage. He discussed performing in front of his family during his Damn Country Music tour and spoke about how his grandfather influenced his love of the genre before showing Fallon the duck call. Green is known for beginning his live shows with a bird call, which gave the lesson an additional link to his performance style.
A duck call is a compact handheld instrument designed to imitate the sound of a duck. Hunters use the sound to draw birds closer, making the device a natural fit for Green’s planned outing with Fallon. For now, Fallon’s progress appears to be a work in progress, but the segment ended with him successfully blowing into the correct end.
Green will next put his musical instincts to work from the Coach’s chair when The Voice Season 30 premieres September 21 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. Viewers can stream the next day on Peacock.
